Flames Destroy Local Firehouse

Historical Articles

From: Action News

MULLICA TWP., NJ-January 5, 2003 — A rural Atlantic County firehouse is in ruins after an overnight fire destroyed the building and some of the fire company's irreplaceable vintage equipment. Action r> News was on the scene at the Nesco Firehouse in the 3400 block of Nesco Road in Mullica Township.

An alarm rang at the firehouse at around two this morning. The fire chief tells Action News that two bays were fully engulfed.

Firefighters immediately tried to salvage equipment and the firetrucks that were inside the firehouse. They did manage to save a couple of trucks.

Dan Wescoat, Sr./Asst. Chief, Nesco Fire Co.: " Our newest truck sustained moderate damage. That was the one that had to be driven through the door. We tried several attempts to get into the building to get the trucks out, but the smoke was so thick we couldn't get through the door. I was the only one with gear, everyone else's was inside the building." One of the trucks lost in the fire was a 1925 Model-T antique fire truck, which can not be replaced. Also lost in the blaze was a tanker truck. Firefighting efforts were hampered by the fact that there were no fire hydrants in this rural area and water had to be pumped from a nearby lake. Tankers from other fire companies were also brought in to help battle flames.

The Nesco firehouse is just one of three firehouses in an 80 square mile area. Other fire companies in the county will help cover the area serviced by the Nesco firehouse.

Two firefighters were taken to a local hospital with smoke inhalation.

An investigation is now underway to determine what sparked the fire.
