It's Time to Change your Clocks & Your Batteries in your Smoke Detectors

EVFC News

It's time to change your clocks 1 hour ahead and you should also replace the batteries in all of your smoke detectors. Also it's a good idea to vacuum your detector, so that cobwebs and dust particles do not prevent the detector from working properly.

If your smoke detectors are older than 10 years old, you need to replace them. Detectors only work properly for about ten years. Smoke detectors can be purchased from most hardware and general drug stores.

You should have at least one smoke detector on every floor of your house. Also you should have a detector in the immediately adjacent area next to any bedroom or other sleeping quarters. Usually, you should place your smoke detectors on the ceiling or on the wall within one foot of the ceiling. Remember, always follow your manufacturer's directions.

For more information about smoke detectors check out the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

LATEST NEWS: Fire burns Bay Meadows complex in Somers Point

Published: Tuesday, February 17, 2009

SOMERS POINT - A two-alarm fire made eight units in the Bay Meadows complex unlivable and brought out about 60 firefighters to battle the flames, but there were no injuries.

The fire apparently started at 5:50 p.m. in an unoccupied ground-floor unit by the stairwell, said Fire Chief Frank Denan. The first units arrived to see flames coming from the building and immediately called a second alarm.

Police Lt. Michael Sweeney was the first on the scene and went into the building to make sure all residents got out, Denan said.

Residents, some inadequately dressed against the rapidly chilling night, waited outside while two ladder trucks sprayed water on the fire from above.

Paul Hornig waited anxiously for news of his pet turtle, Timmy, and was relieved when the animal was brought out in his dish still breathing.

"I always thought that I'd see this on TV, and not be part of the story," Hornig said.
