Fire-Rescue News

Firefighter

From: www.cbsnews.com

The many volunteers who protect our lives and communities all year long deserve our heartfelt thanks this weekend. That's the way it is with these volunteers, of whom our Peter Greenberg is one. Here he is with their story:

It happens every 23 seconds . . . somewhere in this country firefighters are responding to a call.

And what you probably don't know is that three-quarters of them are volunteers, taking their lives in their hands - and sometimes paying the ultimate price . . .

Every October, thousands converge on northern Maryland town of Emmitsburg, at the National Fire Academy, to pay tribute to these men and women who've lost their lives in the line of duty.

This year 105 firefighters were recognized, and 43 were volunteers.

Volunteers like Steven Koeser. His friends and family called him "Peanut"

Firefighters Catch Baby as Fire Ravages Frankford Apartments

Fire-Rescue News

Firefighters caught a baby tossed to safety from a third-floor window as an early morning fire swept through a building that housed apartments and a business in Philadelphia's Frankford section, injuring nine people.

The blaze in a building at Frankford Avenue and Sellers Street that includes apartments and a business around 4 a.m. Tuesday left five adults and four children in stable condition, said firefighters.

Firefighters arrived to find fire on the second floor and creeping toward the third floor. Someone on the third floor tossed a baby into the arms of firefighters below, said firefighters.

Firefighters then used ladders to help 12 residents flee the flames. In total, 21 residents were left out of their homes, said the American Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania, which assisted the five displaced families.

Wilmington Firefighter Hurt in Deadly Blaze Dies

Fire-Rescue News

Wilmington Fire Chief Anthony Goode announced on Thursday senior firefighter Ardy Hope died of her injuries sustained in a deadly arson back in September.

Chief Goode tweeted the Line of Duty Death announcement around 4:30 p.m.

On October 13, Crozer-Chester Medical Center spokesman Grant Gegwich told The News Journal of Wilmington that Hope was downgraded to critical condition at the Upland, Pennsylvania hospital, where she was taken after the Sept. 24 fire.

She had been listed in critical but stable condition prior to that. Gegwich didn't disclose what caused the change.

2 Wilmington Firefighters Killed, 4 Injured After Floor Collapses in Burning Row Home

Fire-Rescue News

Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes

Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes

Two Wilmington firefighters were killed and four injured when the first floor of a burning row home collapsed early Saturday morning.

The fire broke out in a brick home along Lakeview Road in a development called Canby Park.

Wilmington's Fire Chief Anthony Goode said the floors in the home were soft and brittle. When the floor caved, veteran firefighters Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes fell through to the basement and became trapped

The fallen firefighters both leave behind children and families, Goode said. Leach, 41, was with the department 14 years and Fickes, who was 51, spent the last 13 years as a Wilmington firefighter.

Just last week, Leach left a Facebook post that seems to underscore his love of the job.

The Elwood Vol Fire Company would like to express our deepest sympathy to the families and members of the Wilmington Fire Department.
