SOMERS POINT - A two-alarm fire made eight units in the Bay Meadows complex unlivable and brought out about 60 firefighters to battle the flames, but there were no injuries.

The fire apparently started at 5:50 p.m. in an unoccupied ground-floor unit by the stairwell, said Fire Chief Frank Denan. The first units arrived to see flames coming from the building and immediately called a second alarm.

Police Lt. Michael Sweeney was the first on the scene and went into the building to make sure all residents got out, Denan said.

Residents, some inadequately dressed against the rapidly chilling night, waited outside while two ladder trucks sprayed water on the fire from above.

Paul Hornig waited anxiously for news of his pet turtle, Timmy, and was relieved when the animal was brought out in his dish still breathing.

"I always thought that I'd see this on TV, and not be part of the story," Hornig said.

Controlled Burning in Hammonton

EVFC News

The New Jersey State Forest Fire Service is conducting some controlled burning in Hammonton.  This is causing some smoke to move into the surrounding townships

A smoke plume from a controlled burn dwarfs a home on Park Road in Hammonton on Monday, Feb. 16.

Prescribed or controlled burning (back burning) is necessary to prevent a build up of dangerous fuel loads in the forest. It is also a technique used in forest management, farming, prairie restoration or greenhouse gas abatement. Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters. Controlled burning stimulates the germination of some desirable forest trees, thus renewing the forest. Some seeds, such as sequoia, remain dormant until fire breaks down the seed coating.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) today announced the Minotola Fire Company/Buena Borough Fire District #2 will receive $62,486 in federal funding from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program.

This is the fourth fire grant for the company, including awards of $78,750 (March 2005), $46,684 (October 2003) and $10,800 (August 2002).

To date, over $19 million has been awarded locally to 112 organizations in the 2nd District since the program began in 2001.

"It's a great idea that the government helps out local volunteer fire departments," said Minotola Fire Chief Scott Welsh. "This funding will support our 33 active firefighters with new air packs."
