Buena Vista Township man dies in Mullica River crash

MULLICA TOWNSHIP — A Buena Vista Township man was found dead Monday morning after his car crashed into the Mullica River, police said.

The man was identified as Robert Ramos, 31, of the Newtonville section of Buena Vista, Mullica police Chief John Thompson said.

Police, firefighters and AtlantiCare EMS were dispatched to the 4500 block of Pleasant Mills Road in the Sweetwater section at 7:08 a.m. for a report of a car in the river, police said.

Five South Jersey fire companies receive federal grants

The Atlantic City Fire Department and four volunteer fire companies in South Jersey have received more than $1.2 million in federal funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo announced Wednesday.

The grants will be used “to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources required to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards,” according to a news release from LoBiondo’s office.

Atlantic City will receive $611,364, its seventh AFG award.

Man, 85, killed when tree he was cutting falls on him

MULLICA TWP. -- An 85-year-old man died Thursday morning when a tree he was cutting fell on him, township police said.

Ronald Loatwall was pronounced dead at the scene after police received a 911 call from his wife. He was cutting a tree in the yard of the couple's Baremore Road home.

"This event is being viewed as a tragic accident," police said in a press release.

Loatwell lived in Mullica Township for more than 50 years, police noted.

AtlantiCare EMS, Elwood Fire Department and Mullica Township public works responded to the scene.

Galloway home "total loss" after fire

A Galloway Township home went up flames Monday afternoon that resulted in a "total loss" for the owners, according to police.

Firefighters and police responded to the home located on S. Snake Avenue after neighbors called in the fire. No one was home during the fire, and there are no reported injuries. 

First responders on the scene said they were able to contact the owner around 3 p.m. on Monday. 

An investigation into how the fire started is currently underway.
