STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - Friday turned out to be a great day for a fire.

At 7 a.m,. the New Jersey Forest Fire Service was not so sure. It had rained Wednesday, and a little Thursday, too - not ideal conditions for the controlled burning they like to do this time of year while temperatures are low.

But by 10 a.m., the decision was made that the wind had dried out the woods enough for a decent flame to carry, and inside the Coyle Field fire service station on Route 72, men in green jackets and work boots began getting ready for the day's project.....Continue Reading

Child Falls Down Monroe Twp. Well

Fire-Rescue News

by Lucas K. Murray, Gloucester County Times

Wednesday February 11, 2009, 8:14 PM

MONROE TWP. -- A young child had to be airlifted to a hospital after falling into a seven-foot-deep well Wednesday night.

The child, described by police only as being approximately 3 years old, entered a small well house around 5:40 p.m. on a rental property on the Black Horse Pike. He tumbled into the deep hole and was immediately pulled out by his father who lifted the boy to the arms of a family member.

Police Lt. Tony Pace said a small concrete structure with an unlocked wooden door covered the three-foot-wide well.

"The child was observed by either a parent or guardian open the door," Pace said. "They ran to the building knowing what was inside, but just got there too late."

Further details of the incident are still unclear. Pace said officers on the scene reported the boy was incoherent with an abrasion above his eye. Volunteer EMTs from the Cecil Fire Co. arrived on the scene and administered first aid while a helicopter was called in.

Within minutes, he was flown from a landing zone at the nearby Whitehall School via Jeff State One to Cooper University Hospital for treatment.

Pace said the injured boy does live on the property where the well is located. It is one of three buildings in close proximity to each other which abut state game lands.
