Fire/Rescue News - Black Horse Pike accident sends one to hospital with serious injuriesFrom staff reports | Posted: Thursday, July 23, 2009 | 0 comments A small bus once used as a school bus collided with a car on the Black Horse Pike in Atlantic City Thursday morning, police said, sending one man to the hospital with serious injuries. Atlantic City Police Capt. Bill McKnight said that the accident took place just before noon at the intersection of Route 40 and West End Avenue. The details are unclear - there were language barriers with both drivers, McKnight said - but the impact crushed the driver's side of the smaller car, pinning the driver inside and sending the car sliding into a tree in front of a McDonald's restaurant. The driver, who was unconscious when police arrived but did wake up, was cut out of the car by the Atlantic City Fire Department, McKnight said. The unidentified man was sent to the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he remains in serious condidtion but is expected to survive. The driver of the small bus is being investigated as being an unlicensed driver, McKnight said. Any witnesses are asked to contact the Traffic Unit at 609-347-5744. Traffic was delayed on the pike for about an hour, KcKnight said. Posted in Breaking, Atlantic on Thursday, July 23, 2009 2:20 pm Updated: 2:27 pm. Fire damages N. Pa. Ave. house in ACAtlantic City - A suspicious fire caused further damage to a boarded-up home on North Pennsylvania Avenue on Tuesday evening, but there were no injuries, a fire official said. The call about a fire on the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue came in at 6:53 p.m., and firefighters arrived a minute or two later to see heavy flames coming from the first floor of the four-story Victorian building, said Battalion Chief Michael Mooney. Firefighters attacked the flames with heavy hoses, and put out the fire in five or 10 minutes, Mooney said. "A building like this is a major concern, because it's wide open," and oxygen can fuel the flames and spread them quickly, Mooney said. The fire started on the first floor on the left side of the unoccupied building, Mooney said. The siding is made of asphalt shingles, which are petroleum-based and burn quickly. The building has already been the site of several multi-alarm fires, Mooney said. The cause is being treated as suspicious and the arson unit was investigating, Mooney said. The 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue and a few blocks of Baltic Avenue were closed while firefighters put out the flames. |
