BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP - A 55-year-old Mays Landing man was killed early Saturday morning after being hit by two cars on Landis Avenue.

Leonard Armato was hit by a sedan and than a limousine traveling west on Landis Avenue near Llewellyn Avenue around 1:30 a.m., according to State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones.

Armato wound up being dragged underneath the limousine for a short distance, he said. Armato was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Jones said it's still not known why Armato was in the roadway. The drivers of both vehicles stopped after striking Armato, and they are cooperating with authorities during the ongoing investigation, he said.

No charges have been filed, he said.

Officials with the Atlantic County Medical Examiner's Office were to perform on autopsy on Armato on Saturday, Jones said.

Fatal Buena Vista Township accident may have been a hit and run

Update: Posted in Breaking, Atlantic, Cumberland on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 5:10 pm Updated: 5:12 pm

BUENA VISTA TWP. - State Police say an investigation into a deadly accident on a township road early Saturday is now being investigatied as a hit and run.

State Police said they orginally believed Leonard Armato died after being struck by two cars while lying in the road in Buena Vista Township.

Now, police are investigating whether a third car struck Armato and failed to stop or report the accident.

Police were called to Landis Avenue near the intersection of Llewellyn Avenue in Buena Vista Township after two cars struck Armato in succession as his lay in the middle of the street.

Further investigation, however, revealed damaged parts from what police believe to be a Red Nissan Altima, probably a 1998 or 1999 model. Police say car would have extensive front end damage and urge residents to be on the look out for a car fitting that description.

From staff reports | Posted: Thursday, July 23, 2009 | 0 comments

A small bus once used as a school bus collided with a car on the Black Horse Pike in Atlantic City Thursday morning, police said, sending one man to the hospital with serious injuries.

Atlantic City Police Capt. Bill McKnight said that the accident took place just before noon at the intersection of Route 40 and West End Avenue.

The details are unclear - there were language barriers with both drivers, McKnight said - but the impact crushed the driver's side of the smaller car, pinning the driver inside and sending the car sliding into a tree in front of a McDonald's restaurant.

The driver, who was unconscious when police arrived but did wake up, was cut out of the car by the Atlantic City Fire Department, McKnight said. The unidentified man was sent to the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he remains in serious condidtion but is expected to survive.

The driver of the small bus is being investigated as being an unlicensed driver, McKnight said.

Any witnesses are asked to contact the Traffic Unit at 609-347-5744.

Traffic was delayed on the pike for about an hour, KcKnight said.

Fire damages N. Pa. Ave. house in AC

Fire-Rescue News

AC Press

Atlantic City - A suspicious fire caused further damage to a boarded-up home on North Pennsylvania Avenue on Tuesday evening, but there were no injuries, a fire official said.

The call about a fire on the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue came in at 6:53 p.m., and firefighters arrived a minute or two later to see heavy flames coming from the first floor of the four-story Victorian building, said Battalion Chief Michael Mooney.

Firefighters attacked the flames with heavy hoses, and put out the fire in five or 10 minutes, Mooney said.

"A building like this is a major concern, because it's wide open," and oxygen can fuel the flames and spread them quickly, Mooney said.

The fire started on the first floor on the left side of the unoccupied building, Mooney said. The siding is made of asphalt shingles, which are petroleum-based and burn quickly.

The building has already been the site of several multi-alarm fires, Mooney said.

The cause is being treated as suspicious and the arson unit was investigating, Mooney said.

The 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue and a few blocks of Baltic Avenue were closed while firefighters put out the flames.
