Accident sends car into home's porch

Fire-Rescue News

Galloway Township - A car full of unlicensed teen drivers went through a stop sign Wednesday morning and into another car driven by an elderly man, sending it through a patch of trees and into the porch of a house on Ridgewood Avenue, police said.

John Christian, 80, of Galloway Township, was discharged within a few hours from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, according to hospital spokesman Frank Tedesco.

Christian was southbound on Ridgewood Avenue at about 11:45 a.m. when a 17-year-old girl from Galloway ran a stop sign on Eighth Avenue and hit the driver's side of his car, Police Sgt. Kevin Mott said.

The impact forced Christian's car through a patch of trees and across the front yard of a house before it hit the concrete front porch, according to homeowner Jackie Loyle.

Loyle, 40, was at home with her 4-year-old and 11-month-old children when she felt rumbling.

"We were sitting in the living room - I thought it was an earthquake," Loyle said. "I still can't believe it. He could have gone through the bedroom."

Christian's car left a roughly 2-square-inch nick in the siding of the home, smashed front hedges outside the home's master bedroom and knocked one of two porch columns off center.

Officer Bryan Casey issued a summons for failure to stop and driving without a license to the teenage driver, police said. He also charged a 17-year-old male passenger in her car with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, Mott said.

The teenage driver apparently apologized for causing the damage to the porch, Loyle said.

Worker Injured in Ventnor Fire

VENTNOR - A worker refinishing a wooden floor was burned this afternoon when a spark somehow lit the polyurethane coating he was using and the fire spread to the man's pants, a city fire official said.

Fire Capt. Tom O'Brien said investigators are trying to determine what actually caused a fire that started on the first floor of a home in the 100 block of North Oxford Avenue in the Ventnor Heights section of town. The fire department got the call about 1:20 p.m.

A Margate fire department ambulance took the worker to the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, but no information was available on his condition later in the afternoon.

O'Brien credited a neighbor who ran into the house using a home fire extinguisher with keeping the fire from spreading much more than it did around the living room and dining room of the two-story house. As it was, O'Brien estimated the home suffered $10,000-$20,000 worth of damage, mostly from smoke and water.

Capt. Jim Culbertson, Lt. Kyle Smith and Firefighter Jack Hyde are investigating what caused the fire.

Kitchen fire damages Boardwalk home

Ventnor - A Boardwalk home sustained about $35,000 worth of damage in a cooking accident, the city's fire chief said Monday. But the residents were able to move back into the home by Sunday night after firefighters put the smoky blaze out that day.

The fire apparently started when the owners of the home at Derby Avenue and the Boardwalk were using the broiler to cook, and fire somehow got into the exhaust vent and spread into a kitchen wall, Chief Bert Sabo said.

The Fire Department's Platoon 3 had to open an outside wall of the house to contain the fire, which started shortly before noon Sunday. The firefighters declared the fire under control by 12:14 p.m.

Sabo said the house took extensive smoke damage but the firefighters "got in and got (the fire) out." The electricity had to be cut off, but the homeowners got their power restored later and could stay in the house safely that night, he added.

Lightning cited in Sea Village Harbor fire

Egg Harbor Township - Lightning might have created a small fire on a dock at the Sea Village Harbor Marina over the weekend, according to the township.

Township Fire Inspector Don Stauffer said the small dock fire happened at about 2:10 p.m. Sunday after a storm went through the region. Stauffer, who investigated the site Monday, said the marina residents had already put the flames out out with fire extinguishers by the time Bargaintown firefighters arrived.

No one was hurt and most of the damage was done to the television cables that run below the docks and connect to the floating homes and house boats in the marina.

Stauffer said lightning struck somewhere else in the neighborhood and the electricity might have traveled through other power lines and into the marina's television cables. "Lightning does what it wants, goes where it wants and uses different paths," Stauffer said Monday.
