Mold has Atlantic City firefighters bunking with trucks

Fire-Rescue News

Mold problem has pushed Atlantic City firefighters out of their living quarters in Station 1 — but won’t stop service.

The personnel assigned to the firehouse at Maryland and Atlantic avenues has set up camp in the apparatus bay as they await results of an air-quality inspection, acting Fire Chief Vincent Granese said.

Fire union members were at a closed meeting Wednesday night with some members of City Council, discussing the budget situation.

Meanwhile, the department likely will have results of the mold inspection by Friday, Fire Union President Chris Emmell said before the meeting.

A forest fire erupted in the Wharton State Forest near Atsion Lake in Burlington County.

Smoke could clearly be seen from Hammonton and the state Department of Transportation shut down Route 206 in both directions from Route 30 in Hammonton to Stokes Road in Shamong Township.

State police from Red Lion station evacuated residents around 2:30 p.m. on the east side of Route 206 due to the fire. But at 3:43 p.m. police said the fire had been contained to one side of Route 206 and that police were not evacuating any more residents.

State police said on Twitter at 5:16 p.m. that 710 acres of forest were involved in the fire. Police said then that Route 206 could re-open around 6 p.m. if conditions improved. However, it was still closed as of 6:40 p.m.

Emergency responders evacuated a business in Hammonton early Wednesday afternoon after a hazmat incident. ABC reports that 10 people were injured or sickened.

Police scanner broadcasts said a freon leak in the building had sickened multiple workers. The Press of Atlantic City reported that people on the scene complained of burning sensations, tightness in the chest and stinging eyes from inhaling the fumes, and that two people had to be airlifted from the scene.

A South Jersey Times photographer at the scene said that law enforcement and fire officials were working in and around Home Solutions, an infusion therapy business on the  1000 block of Grand Street, at about 12:30 p.m. A crowd of people stood outside watching the action, not far from the building.

Hammonton police have not yet responded to requests for information. Officials say they will release a full report shortly.
