MULLICA TOWNSHIP--A 15-year-old boy who severely injured his leg in an all-terrain vehicle accident was stuck in the woods for several hours during a Thursday evening thunderstorm, Mullica Township police said.

Township police Chief John Thompson Jr. said the boy crashed into a tree, possibly fracturing his femur.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The boy was shaken up and extremely wet because of a moderate storm that passed through the area about 5 p.m., Thompson said.

The woods where the crash happened are isolated and heavily wooded.

Worried family members began searching for him as a storm struck the area, and authorities were called at 7:14 p.m., police said.

“Due to the injuries the juvenile sustained and the time it took for his family to locate him, the juvenile was exposed to the evening thunder storm before the family made contact,” police said.

The remoteness of the woods complicated the rescue.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service transported police and EMS through the woods in specially-equipped trucks, he said.

The boy then transported to a recreation complex on Elwood Road before he was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City for treatment.

“Moving the patient was difficult, he had to be basically carried out,” Thompson said.

Police would not identify the boy.

Township police, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Atlanticare EMS and the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company assisted, police said.
