MULLICA TOWNSHIP — A lifelong township man involved in a single-vehicle accident Thursday night died at the scene, and two of his injured passengers were taken to the hospital.
Police said the call came in about 9:30 p.m. for an accident at Reading and Frazier avenues in the Devonshire section of the township.
The driver was John Perona, 66, of the Elwood section.
His family owned Perona Brothers junkyard in the township for years, but the business closed in 1986 when the site caught fire and burned for multiple days. Perona later operated his business out of his home.
Attempts to contact his family were unsuccessful.
Initial crash investigation reports suggest the vehicle may have been speeding while trying to negotiate a sharp turn in the roadway, police said.
The front-seat passenger, Dorian Scott, 63, of Egg Harbor City, was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City. Gina Yuro, 44, and Arthur Hatfield, 40, both of Elwood, were also injured in the crash. Yuro was taken to the hospital, but Hatfield refused medical attention, police said.
The collision is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Mullica Township police at 609-561-7600.
