10 months ago: Egg Harbor Township fire company gets piece of WTC steel

A memorial containing a steel beam from the World Trade Center was completed and placed in front of the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company on June 18.

“It’s about a 2½-foot piece of steel, and we have a silhouette of the Pentagon and a granite base,” said Chief Leonard Tilley. “We have ‘343’ on it for the number of fallen firefighters (in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks), which is done in aluminum.”

The fire company received the steel in September.

“Since then, we’ve been piecing it together,” Tilley said. “It was really a.....Continue Reading

joint effort between four or five companies.”

Businesses and individuals in Somers Point, Northfield and Egg Harbor Township donated time and skills to building the memorial, Tilley said. The fire company built the base.

Tilley said the fire company is trying to organize a ceremony to recognize the completion of the project.

The fire company is located at 301 Maple Ave., Egg Harbor Township.

Nine months ago: Flooding renews Mullica lake quarrel

Nescochague Lake homeowners association President Ron Lischak said some progress has been made regarding the damages caused by Tropical Storm Irene in Mullica Township.

Irene damaged a century-old dam and flooded a county road.

“The county did repair the road that was damaged (in late January),” he said. “And they did repair the bridge; the concrete abutment there had a big crack in it and they fixed that.”

In February, the dam was brought back to pre-storm condition. He said the county began repairs on County Road 542, which was damaged by flooded blueberry fields during the storm, in late June. Repairs to the road should be completed in August.

Lischak said that the lake association is still working toward a long-term solution to bring the dam up to state standards.

“All of this is still going on, and the lake association is still working with Mullica Township,” he said. “And the county administration folks are trying to come up with a plan of how to work it. We’ve offered to make the lake public, and we’ve offered up a couple of sites for that. The county is reviewing that. I think the process is going to take a while.”

Lischak said that there was no major damage in the area following last Saturday’s storm.

12 months ago: Vineland wonders if meters will bring change to Landis Avenue

Vineland City Council President Peter Coccaro said that plans for meters on Landis Avenue have slowed.

City Council discussed the possibility of meters last year.

“After listening to some of the complaints of the merchants on Landis Avenue, we kind of put it on hold,” he said. “They kind of thought it was more a detriment than it is a help, because actually, some of the biggest violators are those who own stores on Landis Avenue.”

He said Vineland will continue to monitor the situation.

“We’re going to hold off, and we’re going to see how this summer gets through,” he said.
