our fire department."
Fire fighters, residents, and community officials all gathered on the corner of Ventnor Avenue and 28th Street for the unveiling of a brand new centennial clock. A true representation of the Longport Volunteer Fire Company, 100 years in the making.
“We have been collecting money for approximately one year. I had this vision one year ago and I am very excited that this came to fruition, for not only me personally but for everyone in Longport,” said Longport Mayor and Firefighter, Nick Russo.
The almost 17-foot high, fire fighter maroon, centennial clock cost nearly $30,000 and was raised through one–year of community donations.
“I am very proud to be able to give something and donate every year and I am very proud of them,” said Longport resident, Patricia Webb.
But the centennial clock represents more than just an anniversary. It symbolizes the dedication that volunteers take to answer the call of duty, no matter what the cost.
“I really appreciate their dedication and they get nothing as for salary. No compensation. But they have the love and devotion for the service to the community,” said Longport Deputy Chief, Amy Strawder.
“When the bell goes off and rings everybody answers the call and that's what's important,” said Longport Fire Department Assistant Chief, Dan Adams.
“It's a special calling, it's certainly a special calling,” says Russo.
To the Longport Volunteer Fire Company 100 years is already an accomplishment but they say they will be here as long as the community lets them.
“People beyond us, our future generations, hopefully they are here and hopefully they are dedicating something for 200 years of service,” says Adams.
