Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Bob Dube was first on the scene and said he saw heavy black smoke billowing from the third floor.
Dube said because of the time of day and the horrendous traffic, he called for a 2nd alarm. He adds there was a quick response of 15 trucks within 7 minutes.
After the fire was put out, investigation revealed the fire began because of combustible material too close to a hot water heater in one unit.
The neighboring unit sustained heavy smoke damage.
Both families in the two units were displaced and are being taken care of by the Red Cross for this evening.
No one was injured during the fire.
