LUMBERTON — Five volunteer firefighters were taken to local hospitals Wednesday night after their fire truck ran off the roadway on Smithville Road, according to a Burlington County Fire Coordinator David Constantine.
The pumper truck was returning from a minor accident on Route 38 shortly after 7:30 p.m. While traveling southbound on Smithville Road about a mile from Route 38, the engine ran off the roadway to avoid another car traveling in the opposite direction on the narrow street, Constantine said.
The fire vehicle ended up in a ditch and struck some trees. Its roof was sheared off, and the five firefighters inside the rig were taken to Virtua Memorial to be evaluated for minor injuries, authorities said.
