Four other students were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City. Their conditions were not released by request of the families.
The accident happened about 11:45 a.m., when the teenage driver of the car lost control at milemarker 38, near the Atlantic City Expressway exit in Egg Harbor Township. The driver and
three others died, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said in a release.
The remaining four were hospitalized. Their conditions are not considered life-threatening.
The accident blocked the parkway's southbound lanes for hours, backing up traffic for miles.
By 12:30 p.m., a half-dozen emergency vehicles crowded the roadway, with a smashed car located in the highway median.
Police and ambulance used the center southbound lane, driving against traffic to reach the accident scene, which is located a couple hundred yards north of the Atlantic City Expressway's southbound exit onto the parkway.
Since the crash happened this morning, a Facebook page -- "R.I.P Mainland HS Boys. Gone but never forgotten" -- was created. There are more 4,000 members part of the group.
