4:20 a.m. and began asking neighbors about the smell. At first, he said, he did not see any smoke or fire outside the house, but asked his wife to call 911. Then when he went back outside, he saw fire, he said.
Green said both houses directly next door to the house that caught fire sustained smoke damage. He said that he did not know whether any one was living in the townhouse, and that the electricity had been cut off recently. When he knocked on the door to make sure anyone who may have been inside got out, Green said the front door just swung open.
Hamilton Township police said in a news release that the house was unoccupied, and that it took fire crews about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Cologne, Laureldale, Mays Landing, Cardiff and Germania volunteer fire companies worked on the fire. Several neighbors complained of respiratory problems and were checked at the scene by Hamilton Township rescue.
