ATLANTIC CITY---A waterfront structure fire that started on the bay side of a building in 2009 is a constant reminder of why a fireboat in Atlantic City is necessary.

"We've tried the last several years to acquire a fireboat but we were unsuccessful in those efforts," said Fire Chief Dennis Brooks.

water in Atlantic City, when they do happen according to the fire chief ...they're usually pretty bad.

Chief Brooks said, "We've never had that capability and we've had several fires through the years so it would be an added layer of protection for us to acquire some kind of capability the sooner it happens the better off we will be."

Getting on the water isn't' an issue for the department but carrying the equipment that's necessary on a boat like this to fight a waterfront structure fire is impossible.

That's why emergency management team officials attempted to work out a deal with Seatow, a towboat company and have a them build a fireboat for the shore town.

"Hopefully we can get some things resolved with Seatow and they can provide us with a boat and work out a deal with other municipalities as well, " expressed Chief Brooks.

There have been multiple meetings with Seatow and the idea of getting a fireboat built has even been shared with city council but unfortunately the idea is lacking the support from the city due to financial woes and has been turned down.
