According to fire officials, Yahaira Kelly, 27, was warming a baby bottle on the electric stove when she fell asleep.
Ed Vincent, fire investigator for the city, said water in the pot boiled over and caused the range to spark, starting the fire.
Vincent said Kelly awoke when the unit’s fire alarm started going off. She and her son were able to get out of Unit G in building 26 quickly without injury, Vincent said.
“It’s kind of a cut and dry case,” Vincent said, adding the apartment sustained smoke damage but was still inhabitable.
The unit’s stove and microwave were destroyed.
Firefighters were able to stop the blaze without too much water, Vincent said. No other units in the building had to be evacuated.
