A passerby helped save a Galloway Township home from burning by controlling the blaze with a garden hose before firefighters could arrive.

Galloway police said a man - who declined to give his name - was walking on the 400 block of South Xanthus Avenue at 12:51 p.m. Thursday when he noticed a fire in a room of a single family home, according to a release.

The man used the residence's garden hose to help control the fire until firefighters arrived, police said.

The man left shortly afterward telling police "I was glad to help," police said.

The fire was contained to one room, though it sustained heat and smoke damaged and authorities said it was uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation, police said.
