EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - Neighbors and friends fondly recalled Margaret Kines-Leroy on Friday afternoon, hours after she died in an early morning fire at her mobile home.
Egg Harbor Township police along with firefighters from the Cardiff, Bargaintown and Farmington volunteer fire companies responded to a fire shortly after 1 a.m. in the 200 block of Oregon Avenue in the Tilton Terrace Mobile Park.
Neighbors called 911 to report the fire and attempted several times to rescue Kines-Leroy but were unsuccessful because of heavy smoke and flames, police said.
The neighbor, whose name was not released, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Kines-Leroy, who was better known as "Peggy" in the neighborhood, was formerly a registered nurse and an avid talker, said those who lived close by.
"She loved to talk," said Shane Brand, 36. "She grabbed your ear."
Brands lived across the street from Kines-Leroy for three years. The woman lived in the neighborhood for a couple of decades and would visit with him on his porch.
"She was real nice and would come over and talk," Brand said.
Egg Harbor Township police Detective John Heim and Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Detective Justin Furman determined the blaze was not suspicious. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said.
