BELLEPLAIN -- The winter season is notorious for residential fires, and Wednesday night another South Jersey family was forced from their home after fire damaged it.

"My son picked up my two granddaughters, Kendall and Katie at about 3:30, a little after. Came home and the house was.....Continue Reading

full of smoke," said Harry Creamer, whose son's house at 400 Head of River Road suffered fire damage.

The fire that tore through this house on Head of River Road in Belleplain started on the bottom floor, and quickly spread to the upper level.

"You could see it coming out of the eaves, and everything else. He called 911, there was a mess up there. The phone call apparently routed somewhere else, to another cell phone and whatever the problem is, I hope they fix it." Creamer said.

Although the miscommunication caused a slight delay, Harry says that once the eight responding departments arrived, they did an excellent job of extinguishing the flames.

"They did a phenomenal job. The response from I guess it was Woodbine, Dennisville, Belleplain was the first on the scene. This is their district, and they did outstanding." he said.

The Creamers are of course grateful everyone is safe. But, the loss of a home and two beloved pets made for a heartbreaking evening.

"We lost two dogs, it's...that's bad enough. I guess the house is destroyed inside. My son and daughter-in-law want to thank everybody that helped, it's appreciated. I'm just so happy everybody got out alive." Harry said.

Now, he says they'll lean on one another, and start picking up the pieces immediately.

"We're a close knit family, very close-knit, and it hurts me that my family, including my daughter in law, gets hurt like this. It is really...it's devastating." Harry said.

Harry's son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters will stay with him until the home is repaired or rebuilt. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
