An attic fire interrupted a Mullica Township family's morning Christmas celebration, chasing them from their home and stopping eastbound traffic on the White Horse Pike for more than three hours, township police said.

smoke detectors sounded an alarm on the second floor. Powers, a volunteer firefighter, found smoke there and evacuated his family and pets, grabbing a few gifts on the way out, police said.
Firefighters from several area companies arrived to put out the fire, which apparently started in the chimney of a wood stove and spread to the attic.
Mullica Police Chief Paul Register said the house suffered extensive water and smoke damage, and the family was staying with another local family Saturday.
