contain the blaze himself. Two police officers separately patrolling the borough in squad cars spotted the flames and arrived to find the man standing on the porch trying to squelch the fire that had fully engulfed the structure with a small, household-grade fire extinguisher, Longport Police Lt. Bill Hewitt said.
Firefighters had contained the fire by 11:50 p.m.
The man lives there alone, Hewitt said.
Police, fire and rescue personnel could not immediately provide the name of the man. Property records list Theodore H. McCalla from San Francisco, care of D. Mecke, as the the owner of 7 Colgate Ave., which was assessed at $650,000 in 2007.
Investigators continued to work past 1 a.m. Sunday to determine exactly how and where the blaze broke out.
Ventnor, Margate and Somers Point police and fire squads also responded.
