ATLANTIC CITY — A kitchen fire caused substantial damage Sunday evening to a single-family, two-story brick residence on the 600 block of N. Annapolis Ave. here.

8:35 p.m., Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said.

Substantial damage — about $75,000 — was done to the home, with the kitchen being destroyed and a great deal of smoke damage throughout the house, Brooks said.

One adult was relocated by the American Red Cross. Neither the occupant nor any firefighters were reported injured at the time of the fire.

Pamela Grites, executive director of the Southern Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross, said today that the unidentified female resident was relocated quickly after Sunday's fire.

The fire blew out the kitchen window and extended up to cause exterior damage and much smoke damage on the second floor, Brooks said. The fire is under investigation, but it appears accidental and not suspicious, Brooks said. The house was uninhabitable after the fire, and all the utilities have been shut off, Brooks said.

Grites said, in Atlantic City, the American Red Cross can provide up to 28 days of lodging for the woman if she needs it.

"She'll only get it if she needs it," Grites said. "If she is put into another unit (in the building), she'll have a home."

Additionally, Grites said American Red Cross officials are prepared to offer financial aid if necessary.
