large hayride in the back woods by the Abbott Sawmill. The haunted house and hayride is open on weekends throughout the month. The haunted house features ghosts, scary clowns and other ghoulish sights. The hayride has 12 theater scenes, which include Godzilla, aliens and pirates.
The 12 year-old tradition is the main fundraiser for the 20-member fire company, said Capt. Phil Klose. "It's the main thing that keeps us running," Klose said.
A group of 12 volunteers worked 3½ months to set up the haunted house and the hayride scenes, said Hope Perez, the fire company's secretary and treasurer. Perez and Klose called it a "family thing" since many of the firefighters' relatives help out, along with other community members and the Nesco All Around Sportsman Club.
The fire company also will sell "haunted" photos, T-shirts and refreshments. "The full nine yards - we got everything," Klose said.
The festivities in Hammonton start off with a Downtown Trick-or-Treat on Saturday. Merchants along Bellevue Avenue will pass out treats to children, and other activities include costume and scarecrow contests, a mummy wrap, monster mash and pumpkin decorations, said Cassie Iacovelli, director of MainStreet Hammonton. The Hammonton Mothers' Club will sell lemonade to benefit the childhood cancer group Alex's Lemonade Stand. Other highlights include a kid-friendly magic show at the Eagle Theatre and the Hammonton Arts Center's photography club, Focal Point, will be selling photographs, Iacovelli said.
"The most important point is the event is the downtown merchants' way of thanking Hammonton for supporting their businesses," Iacovelli said. The event is sponsored by Capital Bank and Liberty Dialysis.
All three communities also hold traditional Halloween parades with dozens of revelers and floats ready to travel down Elwood Road in Mullica Township on Oct. 24, Bellevue Avenue in Hammonton on Oct. 27 and Philadelphia Avenue in Egg Harbor City on Oct. 30. Other groups holding free Halloween-related crafts and storytelling events throughout the month include the Egg Harbor City and Hammonton branches of the Atlantic County Library and the Hammonton Arts Center.
