the scene three minutes later, Chief Butch Stewart said.
"Flames were coming though the stairways," Stewart said.
It took until about 9:15 p.m. to get the fire under control, Stewart said. The four people and two dogs in the home escaped without injury.
Most of Pennsylvania Avenue was closed to traffic while firefighters fought the blaze and cleaned up the scene. Firefighters carried possessions that could be salvaged from the home and laid them on the front lawn to air out.
The fire caused extensive heat damage, and the family had to find other living arrangements, Stewart said. The American Red Cross was called to assist.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious, Stewart said.
