A one-car accident Sunday night in Galloway Township injured two people and closed Pitney Road in both directions, authorities said.

a sedan struck a utility pole, splitting it in half, at about 9:30 p.m. just north of Spencer Lane.

Two people were extricated from the car and flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City with unknown injuries. The crash severely damaged the car, he said.

Authorities closed a 1.5-mile section of Pitney Road, from Great Creek Road to Collins Road.

Wires hung low over Pitney Road near the accident scene, but electricity service did not seem to be disrupted. Atlantic City Electric's website showed fewer than five outages in Galloway and surrounding towns as of 10:30 p.m.
