200 firefighters from Atlantic and Cape May counties late Tuesday has not yet been determined, State Police spokesman Trooper Brian Polite said. The State Marine Police Atlantic City Station is examining the remains of the boat for evidence.
Michael Fiedor, chief of the Scullville Volunteer Fire Company, said he was called to the marina on Longport Boulevard at about 11:10 p.m. Tuesday. Longport firefighters were dispatched first because they are closer to the scene.
Fiedor said he arrived to see the boat, on "the farthest dock away from dry land," spewing flames about 40 feet into the air as Fiberglas, fuel and other materials burned. He took command and called a general alarm.
Firefighters had a drill for just this kind of situation about two years ago, so they knew exactly how to handle it, Fiedor said.
A lot of firefighters were needed to lay hoses along nearly three-fourths of a mile of docks to reach the boats, Fiedor said. Tankers set up on Longport Boulevard, shutting that road down for several hours between Longport and the bridge to Ocean City.
It took "copious" amounts of water to quench the fire, because flames from Fiberglas are hard to put out, Fiedor said. The firefighters then used foam to smother them.
Egg Harbor Township fire companies used every piece of equipment they had to fight the fire, and firefighters remained on the scene until about 3:30 a.m., Fiedor said.
All five Egg Harbor Township fire companies - Scullville, Cardiff, Farmington, Bargaintown and West Atlantic City - responded, as did firefighters from Longport, Ocean City and Margate as well as the tanker task force, Fiedor said. Firefighters from Marmora in Upper Township, Pleasantville, Galloway Township and Absecon covered the stations.
