A retired Hammonton detective accused of fatally striking a teen with his truck and fleeing the scene will have his first appearance in Hamilton Township Municipal Court on Wednesday.

 the 4-H fairgrounds at about 9:15 Friday night. The driver left the scene, and Montgomery was pronounced dead.

Scaltrito, of Hammonton, turned himself into township police Saturday night. He was freed after posting his $50,000 bail.

Montgomery, who also is from Hammonton, was not a member of the 4-H, people at the fair said this weekend. No one from his family could be reached for comment.

Scaltrito is charged with second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence. No details were released on the tampering charge.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said his office seized the black 2009 Dodge Dakota that Scaltrito was allegedly driving.

A second-degree crime carries as much as 10 years in prison and as much as $150,000 in fines.
