Firefighters in Egg Harbor Township spent the morning on Somers Avenue Wednesday - protecting a home from smoke and fire damage.
The fire was caused by the home's owner, who improperly discarded ash from a grill, said Scullville Volunteer Fire Company Chief Michael Fiedor.
"The grill was used in the last eight hours, and the ashes went through the floor," Fiedor said.
The ash smoldered, neighbors saw smoke from the home's screened-in porch. Firefighters arrived at about 9 a.m. Crews from Bargaintown gave support.
Fiedor said the fire did only $500 to $1,000 worth of damage.
Somers Avenue was closed as firefighters contained the accidental fire. Neighbors watched along the wooded street. The home's owner is on his way to the scene, fire officials said. The owner's dog was not injured in the fire.
If neighbors hadn't reported the fire, the flames - and dry conditions - would have destroyed the home, Fiedor said.
