heavy smoke and fire coming from the house, police said in a news release. The fire was contained within an hour.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire, and Barr said the fire was not suspicious.

Nearby neighbor Brian Murphy said he and a friend saw sparks coming from electrical wires located next to the home. Within a minute, the home was engulfed in flames.

"By the time the firefighters got here, it was 10 minutes after the fire started, maybe less," Murphy said. "The fire spread so quickly, there was nothing they could have done differently."

Fire officials from Mays Landing, Laureldale and Cologne responded to the scene. Traffic was blocked this morning along Route 50, near Third Street.

This is the second house fire in Hamilton Township in two days. A vacant house on Reega Avenue in Mays Landing was destroyed by a fire Sunday morning.
