the department in 1989, will take the position July 1.

“I promise to continue to be a good, honest and faithful police chief,” Register said after the committee unanimously approved his selection.

Register, who moved to Egg Harbor Township about two years ago after living in Mullica for 13 years, said community involvement is going to be one of his goals, focusing on proactive policing and reaching out to juveniles in the township.

The committee also promoted Detective Sgt. John Thompson, an officer since 1995, to be a captain, filling a vacancy left since Barbera was promoted to chief in 2007.

Both Thompson and Register will be sworn in at a special meeting Wednesday, June 30, at 5 p.m. No contracts for either have been approved yet.

Register will assume control of a department that has three officers retiring this year in addition to Barbera. The committee also laid off a part-time, Type-II officer earlier this month.

The committee approved its $5.89 million budget Tuesday night, which includes a 1.8 cent tax increase to make up for a $120,058 state aid cut.

The budget is 6.3 percent larger than last year’s, almost entirely because of a $219,000 grant accounted for in the total.

The committee held its public hearing on the budget beforehand, but no residents commented.
