Firefighters were called to a third-floor unit off Cedar Avenue at 9:04 p.m., and arrived to find a fire in the kitchen, Fire Chief Frank Denan said. A second alarm was called a few minutes later.
The male resident suffered serious burns and was airlifted from a nearby recreation field to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania, Denan said. The female resident suffered smoke inhalation and burns to her hand, and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus.
The entire building was evacuated while firefighters put out the flames and checked for hot spots. The third-floor unit appeared to be gutted completely.
The woman came downstairs screaming, "There's a fire," said Patricia Lisk, who lives in a nearby building. The Fire Department arrived very quickly, she added.
Then the man came running outside, Lisk said.
"He had no shirt or anything on. He was burned pretty bad," Lisk said. "I don't know how he even walked."
"He's in bad shape," said her stepfather, Anthony Messina, who lives in another unit in the complex.
The Bargaintown and Scullville fire companies covered the Somers Point station during the incident.
