40 years before she retired about 10 years ago. The Haddon Avenue resident taught kindergarten and other grades at the Cologne Avenue and Arthur Rann schools.
"She was a fantastic teacher," Emil Buckow said. "She loved children, and she loved life. She had a kind heart, and she would help anyone who needed help."
Emil and Joan Buckow - born Joan Mazari in Mt. Carmel, Pa. - had no children.
Emil Buckow said his wife was leaving a hairdresser on Station Avenue when she was struck about 2:15 p.m. Friday afternoon. Officials pronounced Joan Buckow dead at the scene about 15 minutes after the accident, and police arrived at Emil's door shortly afterward.
Police have not said whether the driver, Egg Harbor City resident Lorraine Marschall, will be charged.
A woman who lives near the accident scene said she heard several people shouting, warning the driver not to back up, and the witness saw a person lying in the street behind Marschall's car.
