Cologne Fire Chief David Elkner said they received a call about smoke coming form the building and the first units arrived to see heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the unit. It appears that no one was hurt, Elkner said.
The fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious, the chief said.
"I'm glad there is no loss of life, no pets. That's the important thing," property manager Brenda Morrison said at the scene. "It looks like the fire walls did their work."
The two units on either side appeared to have suffered some damage, Morrison said.
A neighbor said the two women who live in the two-story townhouse went out to the store "and they came home to find flames shooting from the door."
The court near the fire was blocked off with yellow police tape. At least three ambulances stood by at the scene.
The Cologne, Mays Landing and Laureldale fire companies responded, and Germania, Dorothy and Elwood firefighters covered their stations. The American Red Cross also responded to assist those who were displaced.
Firefighters were still directing water onto the demolished unit at about 12:30 a.m.
