ATLANTIC CITY - One man was killed and a woman was injured in a two-car collision that closed down the Black Horse Pike for several hours, police said.
The accident in the westbound lanes of Route 40/322, just east of the border with Egg Harbor Township, was reported at about 10:45 p.m.
Traffic on the highway was closed in both directions while firefighters extricated the victims and police investigated the scene.
One of the cars had crashed into the concrete median, and Atlantic City firefighters braved temperatures in the 20s as they worked to extricate the occupants. The other seriously mangled car came to rest on the westbound shoulder.
At least three ambulances, one of them from Egg Harbor Township, responded to the scene. Egg Harbor Township police assisted with traffic control.
No details about how the accident occurred were available at press time. Police said the westbound lanes of the Black Horse Pike would be closed for several hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
