A second alarm was called about a minute later.
Two people were displaced and were staying with neighbors, police said.
The extent of the damage was not immediately known at press time. Firefighters could be seen leaving the home, located in an alley behind the street, carrying axes and airpacks.
Georgia Avenue was blocked to traffic between Atlantic and Arctic Avenues while firefighters worked. They cleared the scene just before midnight.
The fire is considered suspicious and arson investigators were called to the scene, Mooney said.
