Torres's minivan went into the woods and hit a tree. Cruz-Alvarez's car went across the highway median into the westbound lane and hit a car driven by Karl J. Mattle Jr., 66, from Mays Landing, Gray said. A fourth driver, Bonnie K. Kleuser, 52, from Egg Harbor City, hit those cars while driving west, according to police.
Torres, Mattle and his passenger, Scott C. Mattle, 36, also from Mays Landing, suffered moderate injuries, and they were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, by the township and Absecon ambulance rescue squads, Gray said.
Cruz-Alvarez was extricated from her car by the Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company and taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, police said. She is listed in fair condition.
The other people hurt in the accident were discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, AtlantiCare spokeswoman Jenna Dearth said Friday.
The accident took about an hour to clear. The investigation is being handled by Officer Al Maiorano and traffic summons may be issued pending completion.
