The clubhouse rests on the sprawling 51-acre golf course owned by Curtis Corson Jr., who built the course on farmland that has been in the family for 11 generations.

"We'll see what happens here," Corson said.

Neighbor Patti Dubruille said her family watched from across a fairway as the fire burned through windows and roared through the roof as black smoke billowed.

"It was gone in minutes," she said.

Dubruille watched as orange embers floated into the woods adjacent to the clubhouse.

Seaville Fire Chief Rob Spiegel said high winds early in the morning threatened to spread the flames into the woods and potentially into a residential housing development.

But rainfall may have helped avert a larger disaster.

"Due to all the rain we've had, the woods are pretty wet," Spiegel said.

The clubhouse, which overlooked the green fairways and sand traps of the course, included a pro shop, offices and bathrooms. The golf course is located off Route 9.
