Fire/Rescue News - Absecon volunteer firefighters host kiddie Christmas party
Those familiar with the annual celebration know it as a local tradition, dating back about 40 years, according to Fire Chief Butch Stewart. Children can have their photos taken with Santa as well as explore the firehouse and trucks. There will be holiday refreshments, such as hot chocolate and cookies and each child will also receive a special prize.
"It's just a fun tradition for the kids," said Stewart. "They really enjoy it, and I think a lot of them look forward to it, from past years."
If you can't make it to this free celebration, don't despair - Christmas isn't over, and the fire department hasn't finished celebrating, yet. The holiday equivalent of an ice-cream truck, keep an ear out for a decorated fire truck that will make the rounds through Absecon from about 5 to 10 p.m. Dec. 19 and 20. The only difference is, this time it's your turn to bring the treats.
"We have Santa on top of a truck with music and elves, and we'll stop and the kids can climb on the truck and we throw candy." Stewart said. "The moms will usually come out with hot chocolate and cookies for Santa. It's great because it's usually either raining or snowing or just really cold. So, we appreciate it."
These dedicated public servants aren't doing anything by halves, either.
"We do every single street," Stewart assures. "Otherwise, we get those sad calls 'Hey, why didn't you come by my street? We were waiting.'"
