WOODBINE - Firefighters doused a small blaze that started Tuesday night in a mulch pile at the Cape May County landfill.
Nobody was hurt.
The fire started after employees at the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority left for the day. Director Charlie Norkis said the fire was probably sparked by the grinder, a giant machine that shreds wood pallets for mulch.
Ground bits of metal in the pallet might have created an ember, he said.
The fire was contained to a small mulch pile.
