Two-alarm blaze contained in Atlantic City

Atlantic City police and fire personnel responded to a two-alarm fire at an occupied home that started about 4:45 p.m. today.

Fire officials said the first trucks were on the scene about two minutes after the fire started at a three-story attached house at 29-31 Marshal Avenue and had the flames under control in about an hour.

Five adults and three children were in the home but had evacuated by the tme firefighters arrived, officials said. No one was hurt. The families will have to be relocated.

The black smoke from the fire could be seen from the Black Horse Pike.

Traffic on Iowa Avenue between Albany and Atlantic was closed off. Firefighters had used a rescue ladder, and the top floor of the building appeared to be burned out.

The cause is under investigation.

Dozens of people stood on Iowa Avenue, both on the street and on porches to watch the scene.

FIRE INVESTIGATION: There's still no word on a cause this morning, after a house fire in Atlantic City left eight people out of their homes. The fire started at about 4:45 p.m., damaging a three-story house at 29-31 Marshall Ave., in the city's Chelsea neighborhood. About 40 firefighters battled the fire.
