“…When I first drove up Sunday evening to actually see what had happened, it was as if you were walking up to a home that had been damaged in a fire or some kind of disaster,” added Frick.
In all, nine headstones were toppled in the rear section of the cemetery, sometime between the night of Wednesday, July 29th, and the early morning hours of July 31st.
Of those markers targeted, at least six may be damaged beyond repair, according to cemetery caretaker, Ray Kuehner, “….its kids, and I don’t know how old these kids are, they can be 50 years old, but they’re still kids if they done this.”
Saying its taken him about two years to put the cemetery in the condition that its now in, Kuehner said he’d like to find the vandals responsible, “….I’d like to get them to put them back up, because its going to cost some money to put them back up.”
Frick, who also happens to be the Egg Harbor City Prosecutor, said that this is a case of such vial disrespect, that it needs to be taken seriously by law enforcement, “….this cannot get just brushed under the rug or just forgotten, something has to be done, this has to be pursued, there needs to be an investigation.”
Because the area of the cemetery that was vandalized is in Mullica Township, that police department is investigating the crime.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact the Mullica Twp. Police Dept., at: (609) 561-7600.
