A small bus once used as a school bus collided with a car on the Black Horse Pike in Atlantic City Thursday morning, police said, sending one man to the hospital with serious injuries.

Atlantic City Police Capt. Bill McKnight said that the accident took place just before noon at the intersection of Route 40 and West End Avenue.

The details are unclear - there were language barriers with both drivers, McKnight said - but the impact crushed the driver's side of the smaller car, pinning the driver inside and sending the car sliding into a tree in front of a McDonald's restaurant.

The driver, who was unconscious when police arrived but did wake up, was cut out of the car by the Atlantic City Fire Department, McKnight said. The unidentified man was sent to the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he remains in serious condidtion but is expected to survive.

The driver of the small bus is being investigated as being an unlicensed driver, McKnight said.

Traffic was delayed on the pike for about an hour, KcKnight said.
