EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - A township police officer and a Galloway man were injured early Sunday morning in a two-car accident.
The emergency call came in at around 7:52 a.m. about an accident at the intersection of Mill Road and Fernwood Avenue. Officer Christopher Leary, 37, was driving a police car east on Mill Road when he hit another car that ran a stop sign on Fernwood Avenue, Sgt. Robert Gray said. The other driver, Luke Akerlind, 29, was trapped inside his car and he had to be extricated by the Bargaintown, Cardiff and Scullville fire departments using the jaws of life.
Akerlind suffered head, back and leg injuries, Gray said. He was treated at the scene by the township ambulance squad and AtlantiCare paramedics, then flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. Leary had rib and wrist injuries and he was driven by AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center by the ambulance squad. Both men were admitted to the hospital.
Traffic was delayed for two hours on Sunday while the collision was being cleared. The case is being handled by officers Kevin Devlin and Al Maiorano and a summons may be issued pending the investigation completion.
