PLEASANTVILLE - An 18-year-old Philadelphia woman was the victim of Sunday's fatal crash on the Atlantic City Expressway, and the hospitalized driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated, State Police said Monday.

Gail Winkfield was one of four young passengers in a Buick LeSabre that Sheila McCrea, 47, was driving from an Atlantic City family reunion back to Philadelphia at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday.

A mile before the Garden State Parkway, the car veered right for unknown reasons, hit the guard rail and flipped over. It appears none of the five occupants had fastened their seat belts, Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

McCrea and Winkfield were trapped in the overturned car. The other occupants were McCrea's 7-year-old daughter and two female cousins, ages 19 and 11.

The daughter and elder cousin, a friend of Winkfield's, have been discharged from area hospitals. The 11-year-old underwent surgery at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City and was still a patient there Monday afternoon, although information on her condition was unavailable.

Winkfield was pronounced dead of internal injuries at the crash scene. McCrea was listed in fair condition at the Atlantic City hospital, with a concussion and injuries to her arm and abdomen, Jones said.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the crash and could issue additional charges. Authorities found several alcohol containers in the car, Jones said.

The speed of the car at the time of the accident was unknown Monday.

Winkfield's Facebook profile shows her in a dress with a sash reading "prom queen" and indicates she graduated this year from the Franklin Learning Center high school in Philadelphia.
