Egg Harbor City -Authorities investigate Atlantic Ave. fire

A fire that severely damaged an Atlantic Avenue multifamily dwelling Monday morning has been deemed suspicious, authorities said.

Shortly before 11 a.m., authorities were called to a structure fire on Atlantic Avenue.

According to Detective Steve Hadley, the building has two units on the first floor and two on the second floor. Both of the first-floor units were on fire when authorities arrived, Hadley said.

The Egg Harbor City, South Egg Harbor and Germania fire companies responded and quickly extinguished the blaze, which also damaged the two units on the second floor.

"The fire is being deemed suspicious," said Hadley, adding that both of the ground units could have been the target of an arsonist.

The Atlantic City Prosecutor's Office and the Atlantic County Fire Arson Investigators are investigating the fire.

Three families were displaced by the blaze, Hadley said, but there were no injuries. The Galloway emergency medical services squad and the Galloway and Mullica police departments also responded to the fire.

Anyone who may have information on the cause of the fire is asked to call Atlantic County Crime Stoppers at 609-658-TIPS (8477) or visit: www.crimestoppersatlantic.com
