EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - A family escaped uninjured Thursday night when a large fire destroyed their two-story house at English Creek Avenue and Schoolhouse Road.

The husband and wife, the only ones home at the time, were asleep just before the fire started, and the family dog woke them up by barking. "They took what they could get and ran out the back door," Scullville Fire Chief Mike Fiedor said Friday....Continue Reading & View More Photos

The emergency call came in at about 10:45 p.m. and 40 firefighters responded to the scene, Fiedor said. Officials believe the flames started on the front porch. Fiedor said that made it difficult to safely enter the home and fight the blaze. He also said there were no fire hydrants on the street and the firefighters had to use water from pumper trucks.

"It forced us to surround and drown it for two and a half hours to knock the flames down," Fiedor said. Fiedor said the fire was under control by 1:20 a.m. Friday, and by 2:30 a.m. the scene was cleared. The home had extensive damage and it is a complete loss, Fiedor said.

No person in the family was hurt, but the flames killed a pet rabbit and it was unclear what happened to two cats, Fiedor said.

The local American Red Cross provided the family with help and they went to stay with family and friends.

The Scullville fire company received assistance from the Bargaintown, Cardiff, Farmington, West Atlantic City, Somers Point, Mays Landing and Laureldale fire companies.

The cause of the fire, which may be accidental, is still being investigated by township Fire Inspector Don Stauffer, Fiedor said.
