HAMMONTON -- Authorities are trying to determine what sparked a multi-alarm fire that caused significant damage to the Water World Fiberglass Pools manufacturing facility on Reading Avenue.

About 100 firefighters responded to the scene and brought the blaze under control at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The warehouse building sustained a "sizeable" amount of structural damage, DiGiovannangelo said.

No one was injured.

Calls to Water World management were not returned by press time Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, several water-soaked rolls of insulation were visible outside the fenced-in property while a backhoe was busy scooping up charred debris.

Air quality tests were performed at the site and environmental crews were on hand to ensure there was no chemical runoff from the fire, DiGiovannangelo.

The plant's location on the rather small and isolated Reading Avenue, as well as the configuration of the plant buildings, posed some problems for firefighters, DiGiovannangelo said.

"The access was very hard. We couldn't get the fire vehicles close enough to the buildings, so we had to set up water lines," DiGiovannangelo said.

Fire companies from Atlantic, Camden, Burlington, Gloucester and Salem counties responded, DiGiovannangelo said.

"The guys did an excellent job. It was getting pretty chilly there by the end of the night," he said.

Hammonton Police Fire Investigator Jared Baglivo is investigating the blaze.
